Cryoturbation and carbon stocks in Gelisols under late-successional black spruce forests of the Copper River basin, Alaska: Soil Science Society of America Journal, 83(6), p. 1760-1778, illus. incl. 1 table, geol. sketch map, 93 ref., December 2019.
In the Alaskan discontinuous permafrost zone, soils developed under black spruce [Picea mariana (Mill.) Britton, Sterns & Poggenb.] forests are affected by fire over return intervals ranging from decades to centuries and cycle between recently burned and late-successional stages. Soils under late-successional forests therefore provide foundational information regarding the potential recovery of soil and permafrost characteristics following disturbance by fire. Twenty-two permafrost-affected soils (predominantly Histoturbels with minor components of Sapristels and Aquiturbels) were investigated under late-successional black spruce in the Copper River Basin, which contains the largest expanse of glaciolacustrine sediments in Alaska. Although these soils are well insulated (organic layer thicknesses of 31±10 cm) and fine-textured with a relatively shallow permafrost table (69±19 cm), 87% of the 129 described mineral soil horizons across these sites showed morphological evidence of cryoturbation. Depth trends in water content and bulk density were consistent with an ice-rich upper permafrost, with suspended cryostructures most common in the upper permafrost. Soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks to 1 m averaged 46±12 kg m-2, with 44% of the SOC stocks contained in cryoturbated mineral horizons, many of which were identified well below the current permafrost table. The most likely mechanism of cryoturbation in these soils is post-fire active layer deepening followed by solutioning and diapirism, generating SOC stocks in cryoturbated mineral materials of the upper permafrost. Future changes in climate or fire frequency that affect active layer depth may therefore have the potential to affect cryoturbation processes and carbon stocks in these soils.

Damage and mitigation of railway embankment drainage trench in warm permafrost; a case study: Engineering Geology, 261, Article 105276, illus. incl. 5 tables, 39 ref., November 1, 2019.
Warm permafrost sites such as those extensively existing on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau present a challenging geological environment for infrastructure engineering. A reliable drainage system is crucial for long-term stability of railway embankment in such sites. This paper presents a case study of the drainage trench along the Qinghai-Tibet railway embankment. The damage patterns to the precast U-shaped concrete lining originally installed in 2008 is described. A coupled thermal-hydro-mechanical finite element model and its results including temperature and stress distributions during ground freezing are presented. Parametric study was also conducted to assess the sensitivity of these results to soil water content and the stiffness of the U-shaped concrete lining. Based on the modeling results, a new design including a coarse-grained transition layer and impermeable geotextile was proposed for field experiment and its field performance six years after its construction is presented. The damage to the original trench was characterized by disjointed lining segments and extensive longitudinal cracks mostly located below the mid-height of the linings. Factors contributing to the damage include challenging construction conditions, uneven thaw settlement, and frost heave stress. Modeling results show that significant horizontal frost heave stress can develop on the outside surface of the U-shaped lining and hence results in large tensile stress at the outside edge of the U-shaped lining. The tensile stress may exceed the lower bound of the concrete flexural strength and induce longitudinal cracks at depths below the mid-height of the lining, which agrees well with field observation. Field performance of the new trench design during a period of six years shows that the improved design performed well and can be adopted for future engineering practice in similar challenging geology conditions.

Glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers (GDGTs) in high latitude Siberian permafrost; diversity, environmental controls, and implications for proxy applications: Organic Geochemistry, 136, Paper 103888, illus. incl. sketch map, 78 ref., October 2019. Includes appendices.
Archaeal and bacterial glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers (GDGTs) are globally abundant in soils under various climatic conditions, but little is known about their sources, relative distribution, and environmental controls on their diversity in high latitude permafrost deposits. Thus, constraints on GDGT-based proxies, such as methylation of branched GDGTs (MBT) or cyclization of branched GDGTs (CBT) used to infer mean annual temperature or soil pH, are also sparse. We investigated the GDGT diversity in typical North Siberian permafrost deposits including the active layer of polygonal tundra soils (seasonally frozen ground), fluvial terrace/floodplain sediments, Holocene and Pleistocene thermokarst sediments, and late Pleistocene Ice Complex (Yedoma). Our data show that isoprenoid GDGTs are produced by both methanotrophic and methanogenic Euryarchaeota, as well as Thaumarchaeota, but their abundance does not seem to be controlled by the investigated physicochemical parameters including %TOC, %TN, and soil pH. Branched GDGTs (brGDGTs) show similar distributional changes to those observed in other high latitude soil samples, i.e., a dominance of pentamethylated and hexamethylated brGDGTs, likely reflecting the adaptation to low temperatures and a positive correlation of the degree of cyclization with soil pH. Specifically, brGDGT-IIIa correlates positively with %TOC and %TN and negatively with soil pH, while brGDGT-Ib and brGDGT-IIb correlate negatively with %TOC and %TN and positively with pH. Moreover, we observe a negative correlation between 5-methyl and 6-methyl brGDGTs without cyclopentane moieties (except brGDGT-IIIa), but this anticorrelation does not seem to be related to the investigated physicochemical parameters. The observed brGDGT distribution yields a permafrost-specific soil pH calibration, pH'pp=1.8451´CBT'pp+8.5396 (r2=0.60, RMSE=0.074; n=109). The different investigated deposit types show some distinct GDGT distributional changes and appear to be distinguishable based on the relative abundance of crenarchaeol, GDGT-0/(crenarchaeol+GDGT-0) ratios, and CBT'PF values, although we also observe strong heterogeneity for each deposit type. In particular, Yedoma and the active layer of polygonal tundra soils represent distinct endmembers, which differ from each other, as well as from fluvial terrace/floodplain sediments and thermokarst sediments, while the latter two deposit types have similar GDGT fingerprints that are not easily distinguishable. Yet, the observed GDGT distributional differences have implications for GDGT proxies analyzed in aquatic suspended matter and sediments. Quantitative estimates of permafrost erosion, as well as soil pH inferred using BIT indices or CBT'PF, respectively, may be biased by changing relative contributions of different deposit types (carrying their respective GDGT signals) to the exported permafrost OC, particularly from Yedoma and the active layer of polygonal tundra soils.

Recent changes in global drylands; evidences from two major aridity databases: Catena (Giessen), 178, p. 209-231, illus. incl. 7 tables, sketch maps, 58 ref., July 2019.
Drying of terrestrial areas is a critical issue in our era of climate change. However, there is limited knowledge on the current spatial status of drylands, which can be assessed using updated and more rigorous data than information used in the initial dryland estimations. Here we investigate the current extent of drylands globally, continentally and nationally by analysing one of the most recent aridity database (1950-2000 period) and compare statistically, for the first time, with the initial dryland estimations (1951-1980). Using diachronic analysis between the databases, we found that drylands are currently almost 4% larger worldwide than expected and cover 45.4% of the Earth's land surface. This net increase of global dryland areas is due to the expansion of arid (+3.4%) and semi-arid (+0.9%) areas, whilst hyper-arid zones decreased (-0.8%) and dry sub-humid areas remained stable. Except for Europe and South America, all continents have experienced a net expansion of arid environments in the recent climate database. Our findings show that Asia is home to the world's largest increases in dryland areas, where China alone accounts for almost one third of the new lands exposed to aridity worldwide. The Earth's drier conditions can generally be attributed to climate changes occurring after 1980. Our results highlight large-scale drying processes and therefore the exacerbation of land degradative conditions at low and middle latitudes. Also, our findings signal the danger of triggering certain positive feedbacks in global warming, considering the newly-identified drylands migration towards higher latitudes in North America and Asia, which can modify the albedo and destabilize the large carbon pools in permafrost, peatlands or boreal forests.

Thermokarst results from the thawing of ice-rich permafrost and alters the biogeochemical cycling in the Arctic by reworking soil material and redistributing soil organic carbon (SOC) and total nitrogen (TN) along uplands, hillslopes, and lowlands. Understanding the impact of this redistribution is key to better estimating the storage of SOC in permafrost terrains. However, there are insufficient studies quantifying long-term impacts of thaw processes on the distribution of SOC and TN along hillslopes. We address this issue by providing estimates of SOC and TN stocks along the hillslopes of three valleys located on Herschel Island (Yukon, Canada), and by discussing the impact of hillslope thermokarst on the variability of SOC and TN stocks. We found that the average SOC and TN 0-100 cm stocks in the valleys were 26.4 ± 8.9 kg C m-2 and 2.1 ± 0.6 kg N m-2. We highlight the strong variability in the soils physical and geochemical properties within hillslope positions. High SOC stocks were found at the summits, essentially due to burial of organic matter by cryoturbation, and at the toeslopes due to impeded drainage which favored peat formation and SOC accumulation. The average carbon-to-nitrogen ratio in the valleys was 12.9, ranging from 9.7 to 18.9, and was significantly higher at the summits compared to the backslopes and footslopes (p < 0.05), suggesting a degradation of SOC downhill. Carbon and nitrogen contents and stocks were significantly lower on 16% of the sites that were previously affected by hillslope thermokarst (p < 0.05). Our results showed that lateral redistribution of SOC and TN due to hillslope thermokarst has a strong impact on the SOC storage in ice-rich permafrost terrains.

Block stream characteristics in Southern Carpathians (Romania): Catena (Giessen), 178, p. 20-31, illus. incl. 3 tables, geol. sketch map, 87 ref., July 2019.
Block streams, as common features in the Southern Carpathians, are essential for understanding the evolution of alpine environments. Despite their widespread occurrence, they have frequently been omitted from previous inventories of periglacial landforms and from the general understanding of landscape development. This study evaluated the environmental controls on spatial distribution and dimensions of 2056 block streams for a better understanding of their evolution and climatic significance. Different lithology classes and topographic characteristics were assessed using standard least-square linear regression and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). The majority of the block streams belong to the linear morphological type, but six other types of morphologies were found (e.g. sinuous, curved, and braided). Bivariate and multivariate statistical analysis revealed a high density of landforms on southern slopes (59%), granite terrains (47%), and above 1750 m. Large features occur mainly on southern slopes and in areas with granites. Landform dimensions and spatial distribution are influenced to a certain degree by lithology, slope aspect, and elevation, making it difficult to identify a dominant factor. Block streams developed extensively at the end of the Pleistocene under permafrost conditions. Today, these features suggest inactivity, but during the cool episodes of the Holocene (e.g. Little Ice Age - LIA), the formation of block streams above 2100 m was re-initiated. Future absolute dating and monitoring of landform dynamics will support these findings.

Probabilistic inference of subsurface heterogeneity and interface geometry using geophysical data: Geophysical Journal International, 217(2), p. 816-831, illus., 64 ref., May 2019.
Geophysical methods provide remotely sensed data that are sensitive to subsurface properties and interfaces. Knowledge about discontinuities is important throughout the Earth sciences: for example, the saltwater/freshwater interface in coastal areas drive mixing processes; the temporal development of the discontinuity between frozen and unfrozen ground is indicative of permafrost development; and the regolith-bedrock interface often plays a predominant role in both landslide and critical-zone investigations. Accurate detection of subsurface boundaries and their geometry is challenging when using common inversion routines that rely on smoothness constraints that smear out any naturally occurring interfaces. Moreover, uncertainty quantification of interface geometry based on such inversions is very difficult. In this paper, we present a probabilistic formulation and solution to the geophysical inverse problem of inferring interfaces in the presence of significant subsurface heterogeneity. We implement an empirical-Bayes-within-Gibbs formulation that separates the interface and physical property updates within a Markov chain Monte Carlo scheme. Both the interface and the physical properties of the two sub-domains are constrained to favour smooth spatial transitions and pre-defined property bounds. Our methodology is demonstrated on synthetic and actual surface-based electrical resistivity tomography data sets, with the aim of inferring regolith-bedrock interfaces. Even if we are unable to achieve formal convergence of the Markov chains for all model parameters, we demonstrate that the proposed algorithm offers distinct advantages compared to manual- or algorithm-based interface detection using deterministic geophysical tomograms. Moreover, we obtain more reliable estimates of bedrock resistivity and its spatial variations.

Effects of active layer seasonal dynamics and plant phenology on CO2 land-atmosphere fluxes at polygonal tundra in the high Arctic, Svalbard: Catena (Giessen), 174, p. 142-153, illus. incl. 4 tables, 68 ref., March 2019.
Terrestrial Arctic ecosystems play a key role in the global carbon (C) cycle, as they store a large amount of organic matter in permafrost. Among regions with continuous permafrost, Svalbard has one of the warmest permafrost and may provide a template of the environmental responses of Arctic regions to future climate change. We analyze the CO2 fluxes at a polygonal tundra site in Adventdalen (Svalbard) during one full growing season across a vegetation and environmental gradient to understand how the interaction of different abiotic (thaw depth, ground surface temperature (GST), soil moisture, photosynthetic active radiation - PAR) and biotic (leaf area index (LAI), and plant phenology) factors affect the CO2 fluxes and identify the drivers of Net Ecosystem Exchange (NEE) and Ecosystem Respiration (ER). Three distinct periods (early, peak, and late) characterized the growing season based on plant phenology and the main environmental conditions. Comparing early, peak and late season, both NEE and ER exhibited specific patterns: ER shown high values since the early season, only slightly increased at peak, and then decreased drastically in the late season, with GST being the most important driver of ER. The drivers of NEE changed during the season: thaw depth, PAR and GST during the early season, LAI at peak, and PAR during the late season. These data allow to highlight that the thawing and freezing of the upper part of the active layer during the early and late season controls ER, possibly due to the response of microbial respiration in the upper part of the soil. Especially during the late season, despite the fully developed active layer (reaching its highest thawing depth), the freezing of the uppermost 2 cm of soil induced the drastic decrease of the respiratory efflux. In addition, the seasonal C balance of our plots indicated a seasonal source at our plots, in apparent contrast with previous eddy covariance (EC) measurements from a wetter area nearby. This difference implies that drier ecosystems act as sources while wetter ecosystems are sinks, suggesting that a drying trend in polygonal tundra could switch these ecosystems from CO2 sinks to sources in a feedback to future climate change.

Pleistocene periglacial imprinting on polygenetic soils and paleosols in the SW Italian Alps: Catena (Giessen), 174, p. 269-284, illus. incl. 5 tables, 75 ref., March 2019.
Because of extensive Pleistocenic glaciations, which erased most of the previously existing soils, slope steepness and climatic conditions favoring soil erosion, most soils observed in the Alps (and in other mid-latitude mountain ranges) have developed during the Holocene or Late Glacial period. However, in few sites, particularly in the outermost sections of the Alpine range, Pleistocene glaciers covered only small and scattered surfaces, and ancient soils could be preserved for long periods on stable surfaces. In many cases, these soils retain good memories of Quaternary periglacial activity, which have never been characterized on the Alpine range. Based on both geomorphological and pedological interpretations, this work aims to investigate these environments, providing, therefore, new evidences to support paleoclimate reconstructions on the Alps. We described and sampled soils on stable surfaces in the Upper Tanaro valley, Ligurian Alps (Southwestern Piemonte, Italy). The sampling sites were between 600 and 1600 m a.s.l., under present day lower montane Ostrya carpinifolia, montane Fagus sylvatica forests or montane heath/grazed grassland, on quartz-rich substrata. The surface morphology often showed strongly developed fossil periglacial morphologies such as large-scale patterned ground, blockfields/blockstreams or solifluction sheets. The soils preserved in such Quaternary periglacial landforms normally showed stratification of different layers (units), separated by structural discontinuities, evidencing different depositional settings and different pedogenic development degree. A strong cryogenic granulometric sorting characterized all the observed soils/paleosols, with silt-enriched horizons and lateral differentiation of sand- and stone-rich parts and fine enriched ones; organic matter was irregularly distributed at depth as a result of past cryoturbation. Compact and dense layers with strong platy/lenticular structural aggregation, wedge casts and large-scale cryoturbations were described below fixed depths in all soil profiles. Thus, surface morphology and soil properties suggest the presence of permafrost during cold Pleistocene phases, with two main active layer thicknesses at 60-120 and 100-160 cm depths respectively.

Long-term complex observations covering the period of 1949-2018 made possible to determine the average annual characteristics of the depth of freezing of wetlands in the North and Northwest of the European territory of Russia together with main factors of its formation, and spatial and temporal variability. The main factors that determine the depth of freezing of wetlands are ambient temperature, snow cover thickness, and a degree of watering of the micro landscape (water reserves of the micro landscape). At the initial stage of freezing, the major factor is the ambient temperature, when intensity of the freezing reaches 0.5-0.8 cm/day. As snow falls, the freezing rate becomes smaller, and when the snow cover thickness reaches 25-30 cm the depth amounts to 0.2-0.3 cm/day and smaller. It was found that the spatial variability of the freezing depth decreases from large values of the coefficient of variation (0.3-0.4) at the depth of 20-30 cm to less than 0.1 when the depth exceeds 60 cm. The largest values of the depth are recorded in the North of the Kola Peninsula, where sometimes they reach from 84 to 97 cm with the average values of 48-66. In large hummocky bogs, when the seasonal freezing comes down to 63-65 cm it links with the permafrost layer. On average, swamps of these bogs freeze down to a depth of 68 cm. The average climatic depth of freezing of oligotrophic bogs of the NorthWest is 21-24 cm; in some years, freezing of them reaches 32-40 cm. It has been shown that the relative warming of the climate resulted in decreasing in the depth of freezing of wetlands in the North and North-West of the European territory of Russia. Relative to the previous climatic period, the depth of frost penetration in the northern Ilasskoye bog decreased by 32%, and in north-western Lammin-Suo bog - by 31%.

Resolving the influence of temperature forcing through heat conduction on rock glacier dynamics; a numerical modelling approach: The Cryosphere (Online), 13(3), p. 927-942, illus. incl. 3 tables, 56 ref., 2019.
In recent years, observations have highlighted seasonal and interannual variability in rock glacier flow. Temperature forcing, through heat conduction, has been proposed as one of the key processes to explain these variations in kinematics. However, this mechanism has not yet been quantitatively assessed against real-world data. We present a 1-D numerical modelling approach that couples heat conduction to an empirically derived creep model for ice-rich frozen soils. We use this model to investigate the effect of thermal heat conduction on seasonal and interannual variability in rock glacier flow velocity. We compare the model results with borehole temperature data and surface velocity measurements from the PERMOS and PermaSense monitoring network available for the Swiss Alps. We further conduct a model sensitivity analysis in order to resolve the importance of the different model parameters. Using the prescribed empirically derived rheology and observed near-surface temperatures, we are able to model the correct order of magnitude of creep. However, both interannual and seasonal variability are underestimated by an order of magnitude, implying that heat conduction alone cannot explain the observed variations. Therefore, we conclude that non-conductive processes, likely linked to water availability, must dominate the short-term velocity signal.

Ground ice melt caused by climate-induced permafrost degradation may trigger significant ecological change, damage infrastructure, and alter biogeochemical cycles. The fundamental ground ice mapping for Canada is now >20 years old and does not include significant new insights gained from recent field- and remote-sensing-based studies. New modelling incorporating paleogeography is presented in this paper to depict the distribution of three ground ice types (relict ice, segregated ice, and wedge ice) in northern Canada. The modelling uses an expert-system approach in a geographic information system (GIS), founded in conceptual principles gained from empirically based research, to predict ground ice abundance in near-surface permafrost. Datasets of surficial geology, deglaciation, paleovegetation, glacial lake and marine limits, and modern permafrost distribution allow representations in the models of paleoclimatic shifts, tree line migration, marine and glacial lake inundation, and terrestrial emergence, and their effect on ground ice abundance. The model outputs are generally consistent with field observations, indicating abundant relict ice in the western Arctic, where it has remained preserved since deglaciation in thick glacigenic sediments in continuous permafrost. Segregated ice is widely distributed in fine-grained deposits, occurring in the highest abundance in glacial lake and marine sediments. The modelled abundance of wedge ice largely reflects the exposure time of terrain to low air temperatures in tundra environments following deglaciation or marine/glacial lake inundation and is thus highest in the western Arctic. Holocene environmental changes result in reduced ice abundance where the tree line advanced during warmer periods. Published observations of thaw slumps and massive ice exposures, segregated ice and associated landforms, and ice wedges allow a favourable preliminary assessment of the models, and the results are generally comparable with the previous ground ice mapping for Canada. However, the model outputs are more spatially explicit and better reflect observed ground ice conditions in many regions. Synthetic modelling products that incorporated the previous ground ice information may therefore include inaccuracies. The presented modelling approach is a significant advance in permafrost mapping, but additional field observations and volumetric ice estimates from more areas in Canada are required to improve calibration and validation of small-scale ground ice modelling. The ground ice maps from this paper are available in the supplement in GeoTIFF format.

This study suggests that cold-ice processes may be more widespread than previously assumed, even within temperate glacial systems. We present the first systematic mapping of cold ice at the snout of the temperate glacier Midtdalsbreen, an outlet of the Hardangerjokulen icefield (Norway), from 43 line kilometres of ground-penetrating radar data. Results show a 40 m wide cold-ice zone within the majority of the glacier snout, where ice thickness is <10 m. We interpret ice to be cold-based across this zone, consistent with basal freeze-on processes involved in the deposition of moraines. We also find at least two zones of cold ice up to 15 m thick within the ablation area, occasionally extending to the glacier bed. There are two further zones of cold ice up to 30 m thick in the accumulation area, also extending to the glacier bed. Cold-ice zones in the ablation area tend to correspond to areas of the glacier that are covered by late-lying seasonal snow patches that reoccur over multiple years. Subglacial topography and the location of the freezing isotherm within the glacier and underlying subglacial strata likely influence the transport and supply of supraglacial debris and formation of controlled moraines. The wider implication of this study is the possibility that, with continued climate warming, temperate environments with primarily temperate glaciers could become polythermal in forthcoming decades with (i) persisting thinning and (ii) retreat to higher altitudes where subglacial permafrost could be and/or become more widespread. Adversely, the number and size of late-lying snow patches in ablation areas may decrease and thereby reduce the extent of cold ice, reinforcing the postulated change in the thermal regime.

Permafrost soils in the high northern latitudes contain a substantial amount of carbon which is not decomposed due to frozen conditions. Climate change will lead to a thawing of at least part of the permafrost, implying that the stored carbon will become accessible to decomposition and be released to the atmosphere. We use a land surface model to quantify the amount of carbon released up until 2300 and determine the net carbon balance of the northern hemisphere permafrost region under climate warming following the RCP scenarios 2.6, 4.5, and 8.5. Here we show for the first time that the net carbon balance of the permafrost region is not just strongly dependent on the overall warming, but also on the CO2 concentration pathway. As a result moderate warming scenarios may counterintuitively lead to lower net carbon emissions from the permafrost region than low warming scenarios. Copyright (Copyright) 2018 The Author(s). Ground surface over permafrost area undergoes seasonal subsidence and uplift caused by the annual thawing and freezing of the active layer. Applying the Global Positioning System (GPS) interferometric reflectometry technique to the signal-to-noise ratio data collected by a continuously operating GPS station in a permafrost area in Barrow, we retrieve the daily surface elevation changes on snow-free days over a decade (2007-2016). Among these years, 2016 had the longest snow-free season, offering the longest and most complete records of elevation changes. Use this year as an example, we show that the ground subsided in thaw season and then uplifted from September to early November (freezing season) with an amplitude of 5.1 ± 0.2 cm. We also develop a composite model that includes both thaw and freeze indices to characterize the cyclic movements. Our composite model effectively explains the observed cyclic elevation changes and could be used in other permafrost studies. Abstract Copyright (2018), American Geophysical Union. Substrate potential of last interglacial to Holocene permafrost organic matter for future microbial greenhouse gas production: Biogeosciences, 15(7), p. 1969-1985, illus., 100 ref., 2018.
In this study the organic matter (OM) in several permafrost cores from Bol'shoy Lyakhovsky Island in NE Siberia was investigated. In the context of the observed global warming the aim was to evaluate the potential of freeze-locked OM from different depositional ages to act as a substrate provider for microbial production of greenhouse gases from thawing permafrost. To assess this potential, the concentrations of free and bound acetate, which form an appropriate substrate for methanogenesis, were determined. The largest free-acetate (in pore water) and bound-acetate (organic-matrix-linked) substrate pools were present in interstadial marine isotope stage (MIS) 3 and stadial MIS 4 Yedoma permafrost deposits. In contrast, deposits from the last interglacial MIS 5e (Eemian) contained only a small pool of substrates. The Holocene (MIS 1) deposits revealed a significant bound-acetate pool, representing a future substrate potential upon release during OM degradation. Additionally, pyrolysis experiments on the OM allocated an increased aliphatic character to the MIS 3 and 4 Late Pleistocene deposits, which might indicate less decomposed and presumably more easily degradable OM. Biomarkers for past microbial communities, including those for methanogenic archaea, also showed the highest abundance during MIS 3 and 4, which indicated OM-stimulated microbial degradation and presumably greenhouse gas production during time of deposition. On a broader perspective, Arctic warming will increase and deepen permafrost thaw and favor substrate availability from older freeze-locked permafrost deposits. Thus, the Yedoma deposits especially showed a high potential for providing substrates relevant for microbial greenhouse gas production.

Rock glaciers are creep phenomena of mountain permafrost. Typically, these landforms look like lava flows from a bird's eye view. Active rock glaciers move downslope with flow velocities in the range of few centimeters to several meters per year. Thus, large masses of rock and ice can be gradually transported down-valley. In this paper we present a comparative study analyzing surface change for Tschadinhorn rock glacier, a relatively fast moving rock glacier located in the Hohe Tauern Range of the Austrian Alps. Aerial photographs (1954-2017) of both metric (conventional) and non-metric (UAV-based) aerial surveys were compared to derive multi-annual to annual flow vector fields and surface height change. For each time interval given we computed a single representative value for flow velocity and, if applicable, also for area-wide surface height change, i.e. volume change. The velocity graph obtained represents the temporal evolution of the kinematics of the rock glacier with good discrimination. Volume change was difficult to quantify since temporal changes were rather small and close to insignificance. The precision and accuracy of the results obtained were numerically quantified. Our study showed that for the Tschadinhorn rock glacier UAV-based aerial surveys can substitute conventional aerial surveys as carried out by national mapping agencies, such as the Austrian Federal Office of Metrology and Surveying (BEV). Thus, UAV-based aerial surveys can help to bridge the data gap between regular aerial surveys. The high accuracy of the UAV-derived results would even allow intra-annual change detection of flow velocity.
